Weather Advisory: Nor’easter Expected to Impact Our Area
A strong Nor’easter is forecast to bring heavy rain, winds out of the northeast up to 60 mph, and coastal flooding to our area on Sunday morning through Monday evening. Low-lying and waterfront roads may become impassable, and power outages are possible due to wind, downed trees, and storm stress.
Township officials met earlier this afternoon to prepare in advance of the storm. First responders — Police, Fire, EMS, and OEM — will be fully staffed and on standby throughout the event. All critical equipment, vehicles, pumps, and generators have been inspected, fueled, and are ready for deployment.
High Tide & Floodgate Alert
- Tidal forecasts for Port Monmouth indicate that high tide is anticipated to be at 1:02 PM Sunday, with the tide predicted to be +5.2 with a level of uncertainty as high as +7.0 (rain in the region). The next high tide is expected to be at 1:46 AM Monday, with the tide predicted to be +5.1 with a level of uncertainty as high as +6.8 (rain in the region). The following high tide is anticipated to be at 2:06 PM Monday, with the tide predicted to be +5.4 with a level of uncertainty as high as +6.8 (rain in the region).
- Because of elevated tides and storm surge potential, the Port Monmouth Floodgate will be placed in operational (closing) mode to protect the adjacent low-lying areas.
- These high tides may compound flooding risks in tidal communities and increase stress on drainage systems and flood control infrastructure.
- If you live in a flood-prone area, move vehicles, valuables, and equipment to higher ground. The Middletown Train Station parking lots are available if needed.
- The Township may close roads due to flooding. Do not drive through floodwater; it can be deeper than it looks.
- Please check and clear storm drains and catch basins near your home of leaves, branches, trash, and other debris to help reduce localized street flooding.
- Secure loose outdoor items (furniture, trash cans, decorations) to prevent damage or projectiles during high winds.
- Stay off beaches. Dangerous surf, strong currents, and coastal surge may cause hazards.
- To report outages or downed wires, call 1-888-LIGHTSS or visit firstenergycorp.com and click “Outages.”
- Never go near a downed power line, even if it appears inactive.
- If using a generator, adhere to safety rules:
- Maintain 10 feet of clearance from any structure
- Use UL-listed extension cords
- Ensure carbon monoxide alarms and smoke detectors are working in all homes and buildings
