NWS wind advisory and coastal storm warning in effect for Hoboken; City, OEM prepared for high winds and possible flooding
The City of Hoboken remains under a National Weather Service (NWS) wind advisory and coastal storm warning from noon today, Oct. 12 through 6 p.m. tomorrow, Monday, Oct. 13.
The coastal storm is forecasted to bring winds of 15 to 25 miles per hour (mph), with gusts up to 45 mph and possible flooding, especially during high tide cycles. Upcoming high tides for the Hoboken area are approximately 1:35 p.m. today, and 2:20 a.m. tomorrow.
The City of Hoboken and the Hoboken Office of Emergency Management (OEM) remain fully prepared and encourage residents to review their own emergency plans, stay vigilant, and remember that forecasts, and conditions, are subject to change, and can do so rapidly.
Gusty winds can dislodge unsecured objects and blow tree limbs down, contributing to power outages. Residents are asked to secure, or bring inside, loose outdoor objects, including holiday decorations, especially from balconies. Strong winds can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Use extra caution and consider avoiding traveling during the height of the storm, if possible.
The City’s flood warning system is operational in case gates need to be activated. Additionally, OEM has placed barricades in flood-prone areas and has notified local contractors to secure fencing, equipment, and loose materials. Public Works crews have cleaned catch basins to remove debris and assist with proper drainage.
Due to forecasts of possible flooding, Sinatra Drive will remain closed between Fifth Street and Sinatra Drive North, in both directions until further notice. Residents are reminded to avoid flood-prone intersections and never drive through flooded streets or around barricades.
The Hoboken Police Department and Fire Department are working closely with OEM to ensure the Public Safety Division is fully staffed and operational throughout, and following, the storm. Division of Public Works crews remain on standby throughout the holiday weekend, in case a post-storm clean-up is necessary.
The City and OEM continue to coordinate with partner agencies including PSE&G, Veolia, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to ensure readiness and resource coordination throughout the storm.
Stay away from downed wires and report power outages to PSE&G at nj.myaccount.pseg.com/myservicepublic/outagepublic or by calling 1-800-436-PSEG (7734).
Report flooded intersections or clogged drains to the NHSA Hotline at (866) 689-3970.
Be advised, all City recreation programs, including youth tackle football, have been cancelled for today. Participants are being contacted directly.
Residents are reminded that municipal offices will be closed on Monday, Oct. 13, in observance of Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Street cleaning and Hop shuttle service will be suspended, however Public Works crews remain on standby to assist with any post-storm cleanup, if necessary.
Residents are advised to monitor local forecasts and are encouraged to follow the City’s social media accounts for storm updates including the Hoboken OEM X page at @HobokenOEM, the City’s X page at @CityofHoboken, and the Hoboken Facebook Page at https://www.facebook.com/Hoboken.
