What Happened?
On October 15th, 2025, the water system lost pressure due to the isolation of a broken water main on East Dormitory Road near the intersection of Bugbee Road on the SUNY Oneonta Campus. When water mains lose pressure, it increases the chance that untreated water and harmful microbes can enter your water.

Harmful microbes in drinking water can cause diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches, or other symptoms and may pose a special health risk for infants, some elderly, and people with severely compromised immune systems.  But these symptoms are not just caused by microbes in drinking water.  If you experience any of these symptoms and they persist, you should seek medical advice.

What is being done?
The Department of Public Works is working to replace the broken pipe on East Dormitory Road in order to restore water pressure in the water main. Due to the nature and location of the break, an exact time for return to normal water system operation cannot be determined. It is the City’s intent to complete the repair as soon as possible.

It is likely that you will need to boil water for the next 36 hours until bacteriological test results are examined and determined to be negative.  You will be informed when tests show that you no longer need to boil your water.
