Scammers Sending Fraudulent Invoices
The Town of Cape Charles is aware of a fraudulent email scam targeting residents, which falsely claims to be from the Planning and Zoning Department.
The emails are notably being sent to citizens who have submitted applications to the Planning and Zoning Department and include an attached invoice requesting that funds be wired to the sender. These emails are fraudulent and not from the Town of Cape Charles.
Many localities have been targeted by similar campaigns in recent months. In this type of scheme, information from publicly available planning and zoning documents and meeting notices is being used, with fraudulent documents designed to look authentic, to target citizens with phishing emails.
“The Town of Cape Charles will never send an email asking for payment via money orders or wire transfers,” said Town Manager Rick Keuroglian. “Any email asking for this type of payment should immediately be disregarded.”
To ensure the legitimacy of emails, the town recommends citizens:
- Review the sender’s email address. All town emails will end with @capecharles.org.
- Never respond to emails requesting payment via wire transfer or money order.
- Verify any communications coming from planning and zoning by contacting Katie Nunez at: 757-331-3259, ext. 30.
