SMPD Gang Suppression Team arrests 15 year old for possession of a firearm 
On October 17, 2025, at approximately 5:21 p.m., officers from the Santa Maria Police Department’s Gang Suppression Team were patrolling in the area of Western Avenue and Kingston when they observed two males, believed to be juveniles, walking southbound.
As officers passed, one of the juveniles was seen reaching toward his waistband and making other furtive movements. Based on these observations, officers attempted to contact the two individuals, who immediately fled on foot. During the pursuit, one of the juveniles was seen repeatedly reaching for his waistband and was observed discarding a firearm.
The two subjects split up, and officers were able to apprehend the juvenile who had discarded the firearm. A search of the area led to the recovery of an un-serialized polymer 9mm handgun, which was loaded.
The suspect, a 15-year-old male, was taken into custody without further incident and later booked into the Santa Maria Juvenile Hall on weapons violations. The second juvenile who fled the scene was not located.
