| Thousand Oaks Detectives arrested a suspect involved in a battery incident in the city of Thousand Oaks involving juveniles. On October 18, 2025, at approximately 1811 hours, Thousand Oaks Patrol Deputies responded to a call for service of a fight in progress involving multiple people near the intersection of Lynn Road and Hillcrest Drive. Patrol Deputies arrived on scene and contacted numerous involved parties and witnesses to the incident. After speaking with both the involved parties and witnesses at the scene, it was determined that two separate groups with opposing political beliefs were exercising their First Amendment rights. Both groups were in the same general area and were expressing their political beliefs via flag/sign waving and speech to the public. At one point, an adult male attacked two juveniles, pushing one of them into oncoming traffic on Lynn Road. The father of one of the juveniles was in the area and witnessed the attack and interceded. Detectives from the East County Patrol Station arrived on scene and conducted their investigation. Through the investigation, it was determined that 57-year-old (A) Darryl Lutz approached the group of juvenile males and attacked them due to differing political views. The two juveniles sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Lutz received minor injuries during the altercation. Lutz was arrested after receiving medical treatment for his injuries for one count of PC 243(d) – Battery resulting in great bodily injury, PC 245(a)(4) – Assault likely to produce great bodily injury, and two counts of PC 273a(a) – Child abuse. Lutz was booked into the Pre-Trial Detention Facility, and his bail was set at $50,000. Lutz later bailed out of custody and is scheduled to appear in court on November 3rd, 2025, for arraignment. The First Amendment protects the right of individuals in the United States to peacefully express their political beliefs. The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind everyone to remain aware of their surroundings and to respect the beliefs and free speech of others, even when opinions differ. We encourage all community members to exercise their rights peacefully and responsibly. The Sheriff’s Office remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of our community and will act swiftly against anyone who engages in criminal behavior within Ventura County. |
