VIOLENT CRIME
The national murder rate has experienced a significant decline for two consecutive years, and the overall rate of violent crime is at its lowest since 1969. Nevertheless, certain forms of violent crime, such as aggravated assault, continue to exceed pre-pandemic levels in specific cities. Overall, the City of Duarte has seen a reduction in violent crimes. However, there has been a small uptick in crimes such as aggravated assaults. It should be noted that most of the aggravated assaults have been isolated incidents.
PROPERTY CRIME
The total rate of property crime has fallen to its lowest point since 1961. Of all the Part 1 Crimes, property crimes have been one of the lowest in the City of Duarte. In fact, year-to-date, property crimes in the City have been reduced by 57%.
AUTO THEFT
Following a considerable rise during the pandemic, incidents of auto theft have been sharply decreasing in numerous regions. The City has seen a slight increase in auto thefts year-to-date. However, despite a slight increase in auto thefts, the overall percentage for the year remains down.
An important exception to the general downward trend, reported instances of shoplifting have risen across the nation. Although shoplifting incidents remain as one of the fastest rising crimes nationwide, shoplifting incidents in the City of Duarte are down 6.8% year-to-date.
LONG-TERM COMPARISON
Many categories of crime, including homicide and robbery, are currently below pre-pandemic levels in various U.S. cities. However, some remain elevated compared to the period before the social justice protests and the 2020 pandemic.
