Halloween Safety Tips from SMPD

🧟‍♂️Ahead of Halloween, please take a moment to speak with your children about Halloween safety. Here are some helpful tips for you to remember and share:

🎃 Make sure costumes do not affect the ability to walk appropriately or to see clearly. Injuries may occur if costumes create a trip hazard or don’t allow for hazards to be seen. Please also make sure you aren't putting small children in large costumes that can affect the efficacy of seatbelts.

🎃 Make sure costumes are noticeable, reflective, and flame retardant. It is helpful for parents of small children to attach your name and phone number/address to the costume in the event you get separated or your child gets lost.

🎃 Only trick-or-treat at homes with a porch light on and appear to be participating in the Halloween Spirit. Do NOT doorbell ditch.

🎃 Remind children to never enter a home or vehicle of a stranger. If entering a Haunted House, make sure there is a trusted adult accompanying the child.

🎃 Keep an eye on your child at all times. There are sure to be many witches, monsters, Marvel & Disney characters and more out there, so make sure you know which one belongs to you.

🎃 Come up with key words you can say out loud if separated. For example, when I say “Marco”, you say “Polo” until reunited.

🎃 Some homes tend to leave treats out front for trick-or-treaters. Remind children it is only appropriate to take one piece of candy because sharing is caring. Also remind them to only eat the candy after an adult has been able to inspect it.

🎃 Establish a curfew for teenagers and set parameters for behavior. We’d hate for our teens to run amok, amok, amok (IYKYK)! No one likes to clean up TP after it’s been hit by the morning dew and egging is so last century.

🎃 Walk, don’t run from house to house, and no pushing. Use marked crosswalks and stay on sidewalks. Pay attention to vehicles in the roadway. Eye contact with drivers goes a long way.

🎃 Use flashlights/glow sticks for visibility. Walk only where lit, avoid dark alleys, and graveyards.

🎃 Don’t forget to use the magic words, ”Trick or Treat” and saying "thank you" is always appreciated.

👻And lastly, for the adults, since Halloween is a Friday night, let's be responsible ghosties. Don't be a monster by drinking and driving. Plan ahead to avoid scary behaviors. If you're hosting an event, be a responsible host and make sure your guests have a good time, and don't do anything that'll haunt either of you for the days and years to come.

Let’s ensure that we all have a fun, but safe Halloween night!
