CRIME PREVENTION TIPS
Below are some simple prevention tips to help you avoid becoming a catalytic theft victim.
PARKING AND ENVIRONMENTAL DETERRENTS
- Use a garage: The best way to keep your car safe is to park it in a locked garage.
- Choose well-lit, high-traffic areas: If you have to park outside, go for a spot that's well-lit and close to building entrances or to busy areas with lots of people and surveillance cameras.
- Strategic parking: When you're in a driveway or parking lot, position your car so the exhaust side is next to a wall, making it harder for thieves to get underneath. If you have multiple cars, park lower-clearance vehicles (like sedans) next to higher-clearance ones (like SUVs or trucks), since those are easier targets due to better access.
- Install security lighting/cameras: Setting up motion-sensitive lights and cameras in your driveway can really help keep potential thieves at bay.
PHYSICAL ANTI-THEFT DEVICES
- Install a sturdy metal shield, plate, or cage: A simple over-the-converter approach can make it much more challenging and time-consuming for thieves to steal the catalytic converter. Stainless steel works best since it's tougher to cut than aluminum.
- Use a catalytic converter lock: Tools like the CatClamp or CatStrap utilize aircraft-grade wire rope or metal straps to firmly attach the converter to the vehicle's frame.
- Weld the converter: If you have a bolt-on catalytic converter, consider having a mechanic weld it to the exhaust system, as this will make it more difficult to remove quickly.
MARKING AND ALARMS
- Engraving: Engraving your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or license plate number onto the converter can help prevent theft, as marked parts are more challenging to sell to honest scrap dealers.
- Paint the converter: Spraying the converter with bright, high-temperature (1,300-2,000°F) paint can serve as a visual deterrent, indicating to potential buyers that the part might be stolen. Some police departments even provide free etching and painting services.
- Adjust your vehicle's alarm: Set it to detect vibrations. The noise from a saw or grinder could trigger it and frighten off thieves.
- Consider a dedicated alarm: Specialized catalytic converter alarms can be attached to the exhaust and emit a loud siren if tampering or movement is detected.
