As Halloween night approaches, the Hawthorne Police Department Traffic Bureau reminds residents that safety is everyone’s responsibility, whether you’re walking, driving, or handing out treats. Let’s make this a fun, memorable, and safe Halloween for all in our community!
Pedestrians & Trick or Treaters:
- Be Seen: Wear bright or reflective clothing and carry flashlights or glow sticks to make yourself visible to drivers.
- Use Crosswalks: Always cross at corners and designated crosswalks. Never run into the street or cross between parked vehicles.
- Stay on Sidewalks: Walk, don’t run, and stay on sidewalks and paths whenever possible.
- Travel in Groups: Young children should always be accompanied by a trusted adult. Older children should plan their route, stay together, and check in regularly.
- Stay Alert: Avoid distractions such as cell phones or headphones when crossing streets.
- Check Treats: Parents should inspect all candy before it’s eaten. When in doubt, throw it out.
Drivers:
- Slow Down: Drive well below the speed limit in residential neighborhoods. Expect children to appear unexpectedly from between parked cars or driveways.
- Stay Off the Phone: Eliminate distractions. Keep your eyes on the road and both hands on the wheel.
- Use Extra Caution at Intersections: Expect heavier pedestrian traffic near schools, churches, and neighborhoods popular for trick or treating.
- Watch for Dark Costumes: Some costumes may be hard to see after sunset. Use headlights early and stay alert.
- Never Drive Impaired: If you plan to drink, designate a driver, call a rideshare, or stay put.
