At approximately 2:14 a.m. on Saturday, November 1, Gloucester Township Police Officers were dispatched to the Autumn Ridge Apartment Complex, located at 1501 Little Gloucester Road, for a report of an apartment fire. Upon arrival, officers observed heavy smoke coming from the “C” Building and immediately began evacuating residents as firefighters arrived on scene.
Fire departments from Gloucester Township, Deptford, Winslow, Washington Township, Lindenwold, Pine Hill, Laurel Springs, and Magnolia responded and worked tirelessly to bring the fire under control by approximately 6:19 a.m. During the incident, six individuals sustained injuries, including one firefighter who suffered minor burns. Five of the injured are listed in stable condition. Despite the valiant efforts of officers, firefighters, and medical personnel, one victim succumbed to her injuries at the hospital several days later. Emergency medical care and transportation were provided by Inspira BLS, Pennsauken, Voorhees, Cherry Hill, Lindenwold, Washington Township, Gloucester County, and Virtua ALS units. The Camden County Fire Marshal's Office, with assistance from the New Jersey State Fire Marshal, local fire departments, and fire investigators, continues to investigate the cause of the fire. At this time, the fire has been deemed non-suspicious; however, the investigation remains active in coordination with the Gloucester Township Police Department.
The Autumn Ridge property management company has confirmed that the “C” Building, which housed approximately forty apartments and more than one hundred residents, has been declared uninhabitable. All displaced residents are receiving continued assistance and support from the Gloucester Township Office of Emergency Management, the American Red Cross, and Autumn Ridge Apartments Property Management.
This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of home fire safety. Residents are urged to test smoke detectors regularly and use caution with candles, stoves, and space heaters as never leaving them unattended and keeping flammable materials away from heat sources.
