We have been advised by the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) and Kay Electric Cooperative (KEC) that an Oversized Load transport will travel through Tonkawa today. This load will travel north up S. Main Street to E. North Avenue, then north on [Blackwell] S. Main Street. We have been advised that this load exceeds the height and width of our current infrastructure such as power lines and signage. Tonkawa Public Works crews will be assisting ODOT AND KEC to raise midspans, crossovers and power lines out of the way of this transport. Public Works bucket trucks and other equipment can be expected in the area of the route. Some may be totally blocking the road and making it impassable. We have been told that it can be expected that interruptions in power may occur. Additionally, traffic congestion will occur along the transport route. We ask that you please detour travel itinerary from the area as not to further complicate matters for workers. We ask to pease not drive through or around the work area of oversized load travel route “just to look at it.” This delays the process and puts personnel’s safety at risk. Tonkawa Public Works and Tonkawa Police Officers will be assisting with traffic direction. Please use caution when dealing with them and mindful of their instructions if prompted as traffic safety will be strictly enforced. There is still no exact time when the load will arrive but it is expected sometime this morning and may take several hours to complete its route through Tonkawa. We have been advised that this will be the first date (out of of three) for a scheduled load like this. The second date range is: November 23-24 and the third date range is December 7-8. We will update the community if any major changes affect those dates.
