'TIS THE SEASON TO BE A VICTIM OF IDENTITY THEFT
As we prepare for the holidays, remember, identity theft can affect anyone. However, you can lower your chances of becoming a victim by following a few easy steps to safeguard your personal information:
- Keep documents containing your personal details, such as financial records, Social Security, Medicare, and credit card information, in a secure location at home and at work.
- Limit what you carry with you. Leave your Social Security card and Medicare card at home unless you specifically need them.
- Avoid sharing your personal, financial, or health plan information over the phone, through the mail, or online unless you have a trusted relationship with the person asking and you initiated the contact.
- Check your credit card receipts to ensure they do not display your full account number. If your receipt shows more than the last four digits, report it to the Office of the Attorney General.
- Use only one credit card for online purchases and refrain from using a debit card.
- Think about opting out of most prescreened credit offers by calling 1-888-567-8688 or visiting optoutprescreen.com. These offers can be exploited by identity thieves who steal mail.
- Collect your mail promptly and utilize a secure mailbox. Shred receipts, credit offers, loan and credit applications, insurance forms, bank statements, and similar documents when they are no longer needed. A “cross-cut” shredder is the best option for this task.
- Create unique, strong passwords for each of your accounts, and protect them. You can learn more about safe password practices and how to safeguard your personal information online from the Federal Trade Commission.
- Before selling, giving away, or disposing of a laptop, computer, or mobile device, ensure that all personal information stored on it is completely removed.
- For more information on disposing of old computers, check with the Federal Trade Commission.
