Guidance for safe holiday shopping, giving
As the holiday season kicks off with one of the busiest shopping periods of the year, the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office is encouraging residents to stay vigilant and take simple steps to protect themselves, their purchases, and their personal information. Whether shopping in stores, online, or supporting charitable causes, safety is key.
Stay Safe During Black Friday & Small Business Saturday
With crowds expected at local shopping centers, the Sheriff’s Office offers these helpful reminders:
- Stay aware of your surroundings, especially in parking lots.
- Park in well-lit areas and lock your vehicle at all times.
- Store shopping bags and valuables out of sight, preferably in your trunk.
- Avoid carrying large amounts of cash; use credit cards or secure digital payments.
- Shop with a friend when possible; there’s safety in numbers.
As online deals drive high shopping traffic, cybercriminals are also more active. To protect your financial and personal data:
- Shop only on secure and reputable websites (look for “https”).
- Do not click on suspicious links, pop-ups, or unsolicited emails.
- Use strong, unique passwords and enable two-factor authentication.
- Avoid using public Wi-Fi to make purchases or access sensitive accounts.
Giving Tuesday provides an opportunity to support charitable organizations, but scammers may also target generous donors.
- Confirm the legitimacy of nonprofits through trusted resources such as Charity Navigator or the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search.
- Be cautious of high-pressure solicitations or unfamiliar organizations.
- Never donate using gift cards or wire transfers.
