Fatal Crash Thanksgiving Eve

South Brunswick Police continue to investigate two crashes that occurred on Wednesday afternoon, one of which was fatal.

NEW ROAD CRASH

At 4:24 pm, South Brunswick Police, Monmouth Junction Fire Department, and South Brunswick EMS responded to a 3-vehicle crash on New Road between Route 522 and Route 1. One driver, a 61-year-old township woman, died at the hospital at 10:19 pm.

The Middlesex County Prosecutors Office and South Brunswick Police Traffic Safety Bureau are investigating the crash. Additional information will be released later.

Chief Raymond Hayducka said, "We extend our heartfelt sorrow to the family and friends of the resident who passed away. We will continue to work with the prosecutor's office to investigate all the details."

EARLIER FREIGHT TRAIN CRASH

At 3:05 PM, a freight train struck a vehicle on Route 535 (Cranbury - South River Road) near Stults Road. The 82-year-old driver said she saw the flashing train lights on Route 535 and stopped. She believed she had stopped before the train tracks, but was actually on the tracks. The Conrail freight train struck the vehicle and pushed it a quarter mile down the tracks. The driver suffered a minor leg injury and was transported to an area hospital. The roadway was closed for two hours as crews worked to clear the car from the tracks.

South Brunswick Police and Conrail Police continue to investigate the crash.
