Multi-alarm Fire Destroys Friendship Road Structure on Thanksgiving Eve
South Brunswick firefighters were joined by dozens of nearby fire companies battling a large garage fire on Thanksgiving Eve. At just before 9 pm on Wednesday, firefighters were dispatched to the 200 block of Friendship Road for a reported structure fire. First arriving units located a large wood-frame garage heavily involved in fire. Due to the large volume of fire on arrival, firefighters initiated an exterior attack, confining the fire to the garage.
“The fire was already through the roof on our arrival, so we were unable to enter the building due to the danger of a collapse”, according to Monmouth Junction Fire Chief Scott Smith. “Crews flowed two hoselines and two aerial ladders to control the fire. The fire was fanned by high winds, and the garage contained a large amount of storage. We were fortunate that we were able to confine the fire before it could spread to the nearby residence or other garage on the property.”
More than 50 firefighters responded to the two-alarm fire, including firefighters from all three township departments (Monmouth Junction, Kendall Park and Kingston), Plainsboro, Monroe, North Brunswick and Jamesburg, as well as the Middlesex County Hazardous Materials Unit. Firefighters from Brookview and Franklin Park provided coverage for the township during the incident. The Monmouth Junction First Aid Squad and South Brunswick EMS provided firefighter monitoring and rehab. There were no injuries.
Friendship Road was shut down for approximately 3 hours while firefighters worked at the scene.
The fire did not appear suspicious, but remains under investigation by the South Brunswick Township Fire Safety Bureau.Instructions:
