Holiday Safety Tips from the Moraga Police

As we recover from Thanksgiving and are fully engaged in the Christmas holiday preparation, the Moraga Police Department encourages you and your family to take some precautions to ensure that your holiday season is merry and safe:

  • As our Black Friday and Cyber Monday purchases begin to arrive, thieves target our packages and mail.  To prevent these thefts, track your deliveries and avoid leaving packages on your porch.  Use a locking mailbox to prevent mail theft and ask a trusted friend or neighbor to pick up packages if you are not going to be home.
  • Do not leave valuables visible in your vehicle.  Burglars are looking for an easy target.  Ensure that you lock your doors and roll up your car windows when parking.
  • If you store purchases in your vehicle, store them in the trunk or out of view.  Consider moving the vehicle after you place the purchases in your vehicle so that a watchful criminal doesn’t take advantage.
  • Holiday traffic can be very difficult as drivers may not be paying attention.  Ensure that everyone is wearing seat belts and remember to drive defensively, watching out for other drivers.  Slow and safe wins the race during this holiday season!!
  • If you go on vacation, ensure that the doors and windows of your home are closed and locked and that your alarm is set.  Ask a trusted neighbor to keep an eye out and sign up for the Moraga Police Vacation House Watch program.  A link is available on the Town’s website:  Form Center • Vacation House Watch Request
  • If you are driving, please do not drink and drive.  During Christmas 2024, the CHP reported over 20 deaths in DUI accidents and arrested 308 drivers for DUI.  This doesn’t include the enforcement actions of all of the local police departments.  Designate a sober driver or use a taxi or ride share service.  Holiday cheer does not belong behind the wheel.
Once again, the Moraga Police Officers Association is working with the US Marine Corps on the Toys for Tots campaign.  Please consider donating an unwrapped toy or two for children who are less fortunate than many of us.  Collection boxes are located at Town Hall, Ace Hardware, TJ Maxx, Golden Palace restaurant, OSH, and Joaquin Moraga School.

Please accept our best wishes for a safe, healthy, and happy holiday season.  Thank you for helping us to keep Moraga a safe community.
