CRIME PREVENTION TIPS
December is here, and so are the holiday criminals!
This holiday season, make sure the spirit of giving doesn't give burglars an easier opportunity to commit crimes. Criminals enjoy the holidays just like everyone else, but mainly because it's a prime time for illegal activities. With homes overflowing with sparkling gifts and stores, malls, and city streets bustling with unaware shoppers, it's a perfect setting.

If You're Traveling: Consider getting an automatic timer for your lights. Request a neighbor to keep an eye on your home and occasionally park in your driveway. Make sure to pause your mail and newspaper deliveries. If they accumulate, it clearly indicates that you're away.

If You're Going Out for the Evening: Make sure to turn on the lights and the radio or TV to give the impression that someone is at home. Be particularly careful to lock all doors and windows when you head out, even if it's only for a short while. Avoid placing gifts in view of the outside.

If You're Shopping:
  • Stay vigilant and be conscious of your surroundings.
  • Choose a well-lit parking spot, and remember to lock your car, close the windows, and conceal shopping bags and gifts in the trunk.
  • Try to avoid carrying large sums of cash; use a check or credit card whenever possible.
  • Prevent pickpockets and purse-snatchers.
  • Don't overload yourself with packages.
  • Be particularly cautious with purses and wallets. Keep your purse close to your body instead of letting it hang by the straps.
  • Store your wallet in an inside coat pocket or the front pocket of your pants.
  • Taking a moment to close your purse and keep it with you while shopping or in public will reduce the risk of theft.
If a Stranger Arrives at Your Door: Criminals occasionally disguise themselves as couriers delivering gifts. Always request identification and inquire about how the funds will be utilized. If you're not comfortable with the answers, refrain from giving. Instead, support a charitable organization that you trust and appreciate. Lastly, remember not to let holiday stress overshadow your festive spirit.

After You've Opened Gifts
Criminals know that many households have new, and often expensive, items in their homes after the holidays.

In too many cases, residents make it easy for criminals to figure out which homes to target by putting boxes that identify their new gifts in plain view with their other garbage. Avoid becoming an easy target for post-holiday criminals by not leaving boxes for new electronics and other items in the alley or other recycling pick-up locations for several days at a time.
Instead, break down any boxes you are throwing out, put them in garbage bags, and place the bags in a trash can. (In many cases, especially with computer equipment, you might consider keeping the boxes for safe storage, shipping, or moving in the future.) Think about keeping
broken-down boxes inside – in a garage, for example — until the evening before your regular recycling pick-up.

Some criminals actually look inside garbage/recycling cans for evidence of holiday gifts. And, of course, if you see someone suspicious casing your street or alley, call 9-1-1. If you see a burglary in progress, call 9-1-1.
