Narrative:
The city of Ojai has selected Captain Tyler Abbott as its next chief of police.
The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office is pleased to announce Captain Tyler Abbott has been selected as the next Chief of Police for the city of Ojai. Captain Abbott brings a tremendous amount of experience and strong dedication to serving his community. He will succeed Captain Steve Jenkins due to his upcoming promotion to commander, continuing the city’s commitment to public safety and community-focused policing.
Sheriff Fryhoff said, “Captain Abbott’s leadership is deeply rooted in learning and community education. His instructional expertise and focus on professional development will enhance safety, engagement, and trust throughout Ojai.”
Captain Abbott began his career with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office in 2000. He has served various assignments including custody, patrol, and academy operations. Captain Abbott spent several years of his patrol time assigned to the Ojai Police Station as both a deputy and sergeant. Captain Abbott led and launched the department’s Training and Development Unit, where he worked to modernize deputy training and strengthen operational readiness.
Captain Abbott is a lifelong Ventura County resident and is deeply committed to the safety, growth, and well-being of the community he calls home. He has focused on building a culture of professionalism, service, and public trust throughout his career.
Regarding his selection as the new chief of police, Captain Abbott stated, “I am truly honored by this opportunity. I am excited to serve the Ojai community, ensuring everyone who lives, works, and visits here feels safe and supported. Together, we will build on the strong foundation already in place.”
Captain Abbott will officially start his position as the Ojai Police Department’s Chief of Police on January 18, 2026.
