Narrative:

The Camarillo Police Department is committed to ensuring the safety of our community on our roadways, especially for our youth. With the increasing popularity of e-bikes, bicycles, and e-scooters, the Camarillo Police Department’s Traffic Unit has been tracking collisions and has observed a concerning rise in traffic-related incidents involving e-bikes.

The trends in Camarillo mirror what we’ve seen around the state and nation.  E-bike collisions are rising significantly, with only two occurring in Camarillo in 2024 while twenty occurred in our city through November of 2025.  Additionally, juveniles are involved in more bicycle and e-bike collisions, with twelve being involved in collisions in 2024 while twenty-one have been involved in collisions through November of 2025.

As we’ve seen these concerning numbers throughout the year, we launched several community outreach efforts this year, including a social media campaign, providing information documents on e-bikes for parents through the Pleasant Valley School District, and we’ve conducted bicycle safety presentations at local schools, reaching over one thousand students and faculty so far this school year.

Based on the continuing rise in e-bike collisions and bicycle safety in general, it has become clear that education has not reduced the number of bicycle and e-bike collisions as we’d hoped.  Effective immediately, the Camarillo Police Department’s Traffic Unit and Patrol Services will begin issuing citations for bicycle, e-bike and e-scooter violations.  We will be looking to verify that our children are riding e-bikes that are fully compliant with the California Vehicle Code, working to ensure that they are following the rules of the road and riding safely, and that they have proper equipment bike helmets and bicycle lights.  Typical citations riders might receive can result in fines, community service and / or mandatory education classes.

The goal of this enforcement action is not to discourage the lawful use of e-bikes, e-scooters or bicycles, but instead to reduce collisions and injuries and increase safety on our roadways for all, especially for our youth.

As Christmas nears and parents consider e-bikes for their children, parents are encouraged to call Deputy Brad Borden the Camarillo Police Department’s Traffic Unit with questions regarding the legality of electric powered personal transportation devices.  This includes popular e-bikes made by Sur-Ron, Segway, Talaria and any other e-bikes.  It should also be known that electric off-road motorcycles are prohibited for use on public roads, sidewalks, or parks.  These motorcycles are for offroad use only and will be impounded if they are operated in a public space prohibited by the California Vehicle Code.

It should also be noted that through a generous donation from the Camarillo / Somis Pleasant Valley Lion’s Club, the Camarillo Police Department can offer free helmets to children from our city in need of one.  Helmets can be picked up Monday through Friday between 8 AM and 5 PM from the Police Department, located at 3701 Las Posas Road in Camarillo
