Winter Storm Watch until 03:00AM Monday

...SNOW FOR THE SOUTHERN PANHANDLE OVER THE WEEKEND... .A long duration snow event is likely across the panhandle this weekend with two rounds of snow. The first round will bring snow the southern panhandle beginning Saturday morning. Snow will mix with, or change over to, rain in the far southern panhandle beginning Saturday afternoon with the transition continuing into Sunday. For Wrangell, Petersburg, and Kake, the snow looks to arrive later Saturday morning and last into Saturday evening. This snow will fade out Saturday night, leaving a lull in the snow. For Sunday, a second round of snow is possible. This round will bring moderate to heavy snow to the central panhandle, from the Sumner Strait area to the Icy Strait area.

* WHAT...Heavy snow possible. Total snow accumulations of 5 to 11 inches possible. Winds could gust as high as 40 mph.

* WHERE...Portions of central southeast Alaska including, Gustavus, Hoonah, Tenakee Springs, Elfin Cove, Pelican, Sitka, Angoon, and Juneau.

* WHEN...From late Saturday night through late Sunday night.

* IMPACTS...Travel could be very difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning commute.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Two rounds of snow are likely this weekend over SE AK, but it's the second round that will impact the central panhandle. Snow will begin late Saturday night with heaviest snow rates possible late Sunday morning into Sunday evening. Moisture availability and warming mid-level temperatures could limit snowfall totals.
