On Sunday, December 14, 2025, Joshua Allan Mayfield, 35, of Varnville, was charged by Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office for Assault with the Intent to Commit Criminal Sex Conduct, Kidnapping, two charges of Pointing and Presenting, Burglary 2nd (Violent), and Possession of a Weapon during a Violent Crime.
The charges stemmed from Mayfield attacking a 25-year-old female victim at the Hilton Head Walmart on Saturday, December 13, 2025. Mayfield entered the female restroom and pointed a gun at the victim and attempted to sexually assault her. The victim courageously fought off her attacker.
The attack was interrupted by a 78-year-old male, who heard the commotion and entered the restroom to see if someone was in need of assistance. The suspect pointed the gun at the male victim and then fled the store.
The suspect was later identified and the Sheriff’s Office pursued warrants for Mayfield’s arrest. We thank Hampton County Sheriff’s Office and Beaufort City Police Department for their assistance with this case.
