Snow Update: Public Works continues to treat public spaces; Athletic fields closed; Reminder to clear sidewalks

The City of Hoboken had snowfall from the evening of Saturday, Dec.13, through the late morning of Sunday, Dec. 14, resulting in approximately 2 to 3 inches of snow accumulation.

Public Works crews were deployed throughout the storm across multiple shifts to proactively plow and salt roadways, treat pedestrian areas, and clear sidewalks at municipal buildings and the Department of Transportation and Parking salted and plowed all parking facilities. DPW crews utilized plow trucks, salt spreaders, sidewalk equipment, and shovels to maintain safe travel conditions. All primary and secondary roadways remained passable during and after the storm.

Over the weekend, DPW also coordinated with the Hoboken Police Department, Hoboken Fire Department, and the Office of Emergency Management to respond to weather-related incidents, including downed trees and localized damage.

Ongoing Operations & Closures

Public Works crews are actively treating crosswalks and bike lanes to reduce icy conditions and improve pedestrian and cyclist safety today. Crews are also continuing to address icy conditions on high-use pedestrian corridors on public property and conducting citywide sidewalk inspections to identify and respond to hazardous icy areas.

Due to lingering ice and the risk of refreezing, all City athletic fields, the southwest pickleball courts, and Pier C are currently closed. These facilities will remain closed until conditions improve, and it is safe for public use.

The Office of Emergency Management encourages residents to continue to use caution when traveling outdoors, as low temperatures and gusty winds continue throughout the day and could cause refreezing on any untreated surfaces, particularly on sidewalks and curb ramps.

Keep sidewalks and curb ramps clear

Property owners and occupants are reminded that they had six (6) hours after the completion of the storm to remove snow and ice from sidewalks adjacent to their property, along with adjoining curb ramps or curb cuts. Residents are urged to use caution when shoveling and to assist elderly or disabled neighbors with clearing snow from their properties. It is illegal to shovel snow back onto streets or onto fire hydrants.

To report an un-shoveled sidewalk, please email [email protected].
