Prepare for wet weather - Safety Tips, Sandbags, and Contact Information
Be prepared for the rainy season! Please pay attention to safety and know who to call for various services! Important Driving Tips for Rainy Weather:
• If traffic signals are out, treat the intersection as a 4-way stop!
• Be extra alert and give yourself plenty of time, in case of heavy traffic and when driving in the rain.
• Drive at or below the speed limit. Roads are extra slippery and dangerous.
• Drive with a safe following distance between you and the vehicle ahead.
• Don’t forget to turn on your headlights in the rain.
• Check tire pressure! Over-inflated tires reduce grip. Under-inflated tires may result in serious aquaplaning.
• Make sure your windshield wipers are working properly. Replace worn-out wipers before driving in the rain.
• Don’t drive with your windows frosted or fogged up. Wait until they clear before driving.
• Never drive beyond the limits of visibility. The glare of oncoming lights, amplified by the rain on the windshield, can cause temporary loss of visibility while substantially increasing driver fatigue.
• Never drive through moving water if you can’t see the ground through it; your vehicle could be swept off the road.
• “Hydroplaning” happens when heavy rain and fast speeds lead to your vehicle riding on top of a thin layer of water, a dangerous situation that can lead to uncontrolled skidding or drifting out of the lane. If you find yourself hydroplaning or skidding:
• Do not brake or turn suddenly. Ease your foot off the gas until the vehicle slows and you can feel traction on the road again.
• Turn your steering wheel in the direction of the skid. As you recover control, gently straighten the wheels.
• If you need to brake, do it gently and if your vehicle has anti-lock brakes, then brake normally.
Sandbags:
• The City offers several locations where the community can pick up sandbags. You would need to bring a shovel. Locations are listed: https://www.fremont.gov/government/departments/maintenance-operations/sandbags
