OFFICER SUBMITTING RELEASE: Sgt. Carla Burr-PIO
DETAILS: The Amarillo Police Department SWAT team took Juan Soto (male, DOB: 09/03/2001) into custody on Wednesday, December 17, following an ongoing investigation.
Soto had been actively sought after evading officers in a motor vehicle on multiple occasions during the midnight patrol shift earlier in the week.
On December 17, SWAT observed a vehicle known to be associated with Soto’s family at an apartment complex in the 5800 block of SW 58th Avenue. Officers observed Soto park the vehicle and enter an apartment. An arrest team and perimeter were established.
Surveillance indicated another family member lived at the apartment and was expected to arrive shortly. When that individual arrived, officers made contact. During the contact, Soto was observed attempting to flee from the rear of the apartment and was taken into custody without incident.
During the arrest, officers seized an AR-15 rifle, a 9mm handgun, ammunition, and approximately one-half pound of cocaine.
In addition to on-view offenses, Soto was determined to be an undocumented immigrant and had an active Randall County warrant for Bond Surrender related to a DWI charge. Homeland Security was notified regarding his immigration status.
Soto was booked into the Randall County Detention Center on the Bond Surrender warrant and for Possession of a Controlled Substance, Penalty Group 1, over 200 grams. Federal firearms and drug charges are pending and a federal detainer for his immigration status is in place.
