CulverAlerts: Storm Activity Expected — Hillside Residents and Others Encouraged to Prepare

CulverAlerts: Story Advisory

A storm system is expected to impact Culver City beginning Tuesday and continuing through at least Friday, with the potential for several days of steady to heavy rain. The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch from Tuesday, December 23rd at 4:00 PM through Thursday, December 25th at 10:00 PM, which means conditions are favorable for landslides, mudslides, and flooding, including in areas that do not typically experience it.

Hillside residents and others in areas vulnerable to landslides, debris flows, or localized flooding are encouraged to prepare in advance. Sandbags are available at Culver City Fire Station 1, located at 9600 Culver Boulevard. Sandbags are available on a self-serve basis at the rear of the station near the Irving Place gate. The limit is 10 sandbags per household.

Potential heavy rainfall and flooding may create hazardous driving conditions. Avoid unnecessary travel during the storm. If you must drive, slow down, allow extra time, and stay alert for road closures or debris. Never drive through flooded areas. Turn around, don't drown. Remember: Even after the rain ends, roads will remain slick.

There is also the potential for periods of gusty winds across the region, which may result in downed tree limbs, power outages, and additional hazards. For National Weather Service alerts, please visit www.weather.gov/lox

As the storm approaches, please take the following actions:
• Review important phone numbers such as utilities, public safety, and city services in case of outages or emergencies.

• Stay indoors when possible, secure outdoor items, and have flashlights, batteries, and emergency supplies ready.

• Stay informed through CulverAlerts, the city’s official emergency alert system. Create a profile if you haven’t already and if you’ve already signed up, login to make sure your contact information and address are up to date at www.culvercityfd.gov/CulverAlerts

• Learn about Genasys Protect (the system used during the Palisades Fire), a zone-based alerting tool that works alongside CulverAlerts. The city is divided into fifteen zones, allowing alerts to reach only the neighborhoods directly affected by an emergency. Find your zone at protect.genasys.com

• Be aware of the Hi-Lo Audible Warning System, a distinctive Hi-Lo siren used by emergency vehicles to signal an immediate need to evacuate. When you hear Hi-Lo, it's time to go. Learn more at www.culvercityfd.gov/Hi-Lo
