Advisory

Winter Storm Warning in effect; Garage D full; $5 garage parking in Garage B & Midtown available; Remove parked cars from snow routes

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect until 1 p.m. tomorrow with snow of up to 9 inches expected. Hoboken Public Works crews will be salting and plowing roads as needed before, during, and after the storm.

The Office of Emergency Management (OEM) encourages residents to stay off the roads and avoid traveling, if possible, this evening when the storm could bring 2 to 3 inches of snow per hour and limit visibility. If residents must travel, they are encouraged to use mass transit.

Parking on Emergency Snow Routes is Prohibited Starting at 6 p.m.

Due to the storm and predicted snow accumulation, snow emergency routes will be enforced starting at 6 p.m. after the first snowfall. Vehicles parked on snow emergency routes after 6 p.m. will be subject to ticketing and towing. This is necessary to assist Hoboken police, fire, and EMS in responding to resident emergencies during the storm.

Emergency snow routes in Hoboken are labeled with street signs that read “No Parking When Road Is Snow Covered.” A map of emergency snow routes is available on the City’s website: www.hobokennj.gov/snow and are listed below.

  • Fourth Street – South Side – River St. to Jackson St.
  • Willow Avenue West Side – Observer Hwy. to 11th St.  (County Road)
  • Third Street – North Side – Jackson St. to River St.
  • Ninth Street – North Side – Jackson St. to Castle Point Ter.
  • Fifth Street- South Side – Clinton St. to River St.
  • Washington Street (Both Sides)
  • Observer Highway – (Both Sides) Henderson St. to Hudson St.  (County Road)
  • 13th Street – North Side – Washington St. to Madison St.
  • 13th Street – South Side – Washington St. to Hudson St.

Snow emergency routes will remain in place until after snowfall ceases, the streets are plowed sufficiently, and to the extent that parking will not interfere with the flow of traffic for emergency operations.

As a reminder, Temporary No-Parking signs have been posted on the east side of Grand Street between Third and Eighth Streets to allow plows to completely clear snow to the curbline, which can help prevent parked vehicles from encroaching into the travel lane and allow for the effective flow of traffic. The signs are in effect for 24 hours, beginning at 4 p.m., today, Dec. 26, until 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 27.

Garage D full; $5 Parking in Municipal Garage B and Midtown Garage begins at 4 p.m.

Garage D is currently at capacity. A special discounted parking rate of $5 per 24-hour period is still being offered at Garage B (28 2nd St.) and the Midtown Garage (371 4th St.) for residents with Resident On-Street Parking Permits or Temporary Parking Permits. The discounted rate begins today, Dec. 26, at 4 p.m. and ends tomorrow, Dec. 27, at 4 p.m.

Please note, garages fill quickly as space is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis, and some individuals choose to park their vehicles early at posted rates. Regular rates apply at other times.

Keep Sidewalks and Curb Ramps Clear

Property owners and occupants are reminded that they have six (6) hours after the completion of a storm to remove snow and ice from sidewalks adjacent to their property, along with adjoining curb ramps or curb cuts.

Residents are urged to use caution when shoveling as the snow is expected to be wet and heavy. Please assist elderly or disabled neighbors with clearing snow from their properties. It is illegal to shovel snow back onto streets or onto fire hydrants.

The City performs proactive inspections and relies on citizen complaints to help identify property owners that are not meeting sidewalk safety requirements. While most property owners comply with the safety regulations, the City will issue fines to those who do not keep sidewalks clear.

To report an un-shoveled sidewalk, please email [email protected].
