Winter Storm Recap: Dec. 26 – Dec. 27

The City received approximately 4 inches of snow between Dec. 26 and Dec. 27. Throughout the storm, the City’s Division of Public Works (DPW) crews operated across multiple shifts to plow and salt roadways, treat pedestrian areas on public property, and clear sidewalks at municipal buildings. The Department of Transportation and Parking also salted and plowed all municipal parking facilities.

DPW crews utilized plows, salt spreaders, multi hogs, and shovels to  maintain safe travel conditions throughout the event. As a result, all primary and secondary roadways remained passable during and after the storm.

Emergency Responses

Throughout the storm, OEM coordinated with DPW, the Hoboken Police Department, and Hoboken Fire Department to address weather-related incidents, and HPD and HFD had 89 calls for service. These calls were responded to quickly as Emergency Snow Routes were cleared early in the storm. Thank you to everyone who proactively removed their vehicle from an Emergency Snow Route following phone calls from the Hoboken Parking Utility.

Municipal Garage Parking and Refund Information

During the snow emergency, more than 400 residents parked in municipal garages at the discounted $5 rate.

Due to a hardware malfunction at the Midtown Garage on Saturday  evening some Residential Parking Permit (RPP) holders were charged more than the reduced $5 rate. The City has already issued refunds for many affected residents, but any eligible permit holder who entered Midtown Garage after 4 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 26, and exited Midtown Garage on Saturday evening, Dec. 27, and was charged more than $5 may request a refund by emailing [email protected] with the subject line “Midtown Garage Refund.” Those requesting a refund should include either a copy of their parking receipt or the last four digits of the credit card they used for payment to be considered for reimbursement by HPU.

Sidewalk Snow and Ice Removal Reminders

As a reminder, property owners are responsible for removing snow and ice from sidewalks, curb ramps, and curb cuts adjacent to their property within 6 hours after the completion of a snowstorm. Removing ice and snow ensures pedestrian accessibility and prevents dangerous slipping and tripping hazards for the safety of residents and community members.

After every storm, the City conducts proactive inspections and relies on citizen reports to identify property owners who are not meeting sidewalk safety requirements. While most property owners are responsible neighbors, the City issued 51 summonses to property owners who failed to keep their sidewalks clear.

In the future, residents can report an unshoveled sidewalk by sending an email to [email protected]
