The City of Sonora has been made aware of reports of a natural gas odor in the central part of Sonora, particularly near 2nd and Murphy Street.
 
City officials have spoken directly with West Texas Gas, our local natural gas provider. West Texas Gas has confirmed they are performing routine maintenance and service work on their natural gas system in the Myers Road area.
 
During this process, residents may notice a strong sulfur or “rotten egg” smell. This odor comes from mercaptan, a substance intentionally added to natural gas so it can be easily detected.
 

• There is NO natural gas leak
• There is NO danger at this time
• There is no need for alarm or concern

The Sonora Fire Department, Sutton County Sheriff’s Office, and Sonora Police Department have all been notified and are aware of the situation.
