Severe weather warning high winds in effect for weekend starting this afternoon

The weather impact level for is: Moderate to High

  • Strong west-southwesterly winds along the Aleutian Chain Sunday Morning through Monday Morning.
  • Core of strongest winds expected over Adak and Atka, with gusts 80-100 mph possible.
  • Winds over Shemya and Unalaska may see wind gusts up to 80 mph.

  • High confidence for wind gusts up to 75 mph.
  • Low confidence for wind gusts greater than 85 mph.
Weather Summary:
A strong, hurricane force low is expected to move towards the Bering Sea this weekend. The initial front will bring widespread gale force winds (up to 40 mph) to the Aleutian Chain on Saturday. A second front moves over the Aleutian Chain Sunday morning, bringing stronger winds 60 to 70 mph with wind gusts 70 to 100 mph possible. Winds will gradually diminish through Monday, but gusty winds may persist into Tuesday, especially for Unalaksa.
