On January 3, 2026, at approximately 12:22 a.m., Fremont Police was dispatched to a parking lot on the 5000 block of Mowry Avenue for a report of a shooting. The caller advised he shot his spouse and wanted to turn himself into custody.
Officers arrived on scene and detained the 93-year-old reporting party who was by his own vehicle. Officers located the victim (age 86), seated in the front passenger seat. The victim presented with a physical injury and was pronounced deceased on scene. A firearm was also recovered inside the vehicle.
Richard Hocking was placed into custody and transported back to the Fremont Police Department. Hocking provided a statement to Fremont Police detectives, articulating the reasoning behind the incident. He was subsequently booked into custody for homicide and a gun related enhancement. The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office will be reviewing the case and respective evidence.
Based on the circumstances, this appears to be an isolated incident and there is no threat to the community. This remains an active investigation.
This is Fremont’s first homicide in 2026.
