APD reminder to property owners to check property regularly to deter squatters.

The Amarillo Police Department is reminding property owners to regularly monitor vacant properties following an increase in reports and calls for service related to squatters.

In many cases, squatters temporarily occupy vacant homes or buildings, causing significant damage before moving on. While officers can remove individuals once they are discovered, and charge them with trespassing and damages, the damage to the property is often already done—resulting in financial and emotional hardship for owners.

APD encourages property owners to take proactive steps to help prevent unauthorized entry, including:

  • Checking properties frequently

  • Asking neighbors to report suspicious activity

  • Using automatic or motion-activated lighting

  • Ensuring all doors, windows, gates, and fences are secured

  • Installing cameras to monitor the property when unoccupied

Property owners with questions or concerns are encouraged to contact the APD Public Information Office at [email protected]. APD also offers free security assessments to help owners identify ways to better protect vacant properties.

Taking preventative measures can significantly reduce the risk of squatting and property damage.
