CATALYTIC CONVERTER THEFTS

Catalytic converter thefts are on the rise! While the daily numbers may vary, California has seen a significant increase in these thefts, with estimates ranging from dozens to hundreds each day in certain regions. The theft of catalytic converters is a substantial concern for car owners nationwide. This particular vehicle part has become a target for many thieves in Southern California.

Typically, stolen catalytic converters are sold for around $300 to $500, while victims may face replacement costs of up to $3,000. To help car owners prevent or reduce the risk of this type of theft, several strategies have been suggested:

  • Engrave your catalytic converter with your vehicle's Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
  • Install an anti-theft device designed explicitly for catalytic converters. These devices come in various styles from different manufacturers and can significantly improve security against theft.
  • Always park your vehicles in garages or carports. If you must park in driveways or on the street, consider installing motion-sensor security lights, cameras, and anti-theft car alarms. Motion-sensing lights can deter some thieves by providing sudden illumination, encouraging them to leave the area.
  • If your catalytic converter is stolen, contact your local police department and your insurance company right away.
  • The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD) is aware of this crime trend and is actively working to prevent such incidents in our community. We are increasing patrols in neighborhoods, local businesses, and schools, and educating the community on preventative measures. These are just a few of the ways we are dedicated to ensuring the safety of our citizens and their vehicles.
  • It's important to note that Toyota Corollas (all years) have been the preferred target for the recent surge in catalytic converter thefts. This is evident in the above synopsis of crimes that occurred in the City between December 28, 2025, and January 3, 2026.
