Advisory

Marin Boulevard to remain closed for NJDEP construction

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection announced during a community meeting on Jan. 8 that Rebuild by Design (RBD) construction will continue on Marin Boulevard in Jersey City and end in March, during which time the road will remain closed. The construction delay is the result of weather, underground utility conflicts, and required utility relocation.

In addition, the NJDEP will begin staging for test pitting and construction work on Monday, Jan. 12, in the parking lane on the west side of Washington Street between 13th Street and 14th Street as part of the RBD project. Hoboken community members are asked to observe posted Temporary No Parking signs. No traffic impacts are anticipated at this time.

The Rebuild by Design – Hudson River project aims to mitigate flooding caused by storm surge through the construction of a resist structure comprised of levees, berms, and floodgates. The resist structure will be integrated into the urban landscape, including within Harborside Park located in northeast Hoboken and through wayfinding signage, benches, and other urban amenities in southern Hoboken.

So far, the NJDEP has constructed over 4,650 linear feet of the resist structure and installed six flood gates with two more in fabrication. Approximately 90 percent of the resist structure in Harborside Park has been completed.

As Marin Boulevard will remain closed, the City will also conduct drinking water infrastructure upgrades within the existing RBD work zone. The infrastructure improvements aim to better manage water pressure fluctuations to avoid future water main breaks through a partnership with Veolia. The work will not impact or extend the length of the Marin Boulevard closure.
