Prepare for freezing temperatures: Cold weather shelters to open Thursday
According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, Beaufort County is expected to experience some of the coldest temperatures of the season beginning Thursday evening and continuing into Friday morning. Forecasts call for temperatures in the lower to mid-20s inland and upper 20s along the coast, with below-freezing temperatures lasting eight to 12 hours.
To help ensure the safety of those in need during this cold weather event, two cold weather shelters will open on Thursday, January 15:
- Sea Island Presbyterian Church
- 81 Lady’s Island Drive, Beaufort
- Opens: 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Closes: 8:00 a.m. Friday
- Dinner and breakfast provided
- Showers available
- No weapons, alcohol, smoking, or pets permitted (service animals allowed)

- Opens: 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Closes: 7:30 a.m. Friday
- Dinner and morning to-go meal provided
- No weapons, alcohol, smoking, or pets permitted (service animals allowed)

- Minimize time outdoors
- Prepare for possible power outages
- Check on elderly neighbors and other vulnerable individuals
- Pets
- Keep pets warm, dry, and indoors as much as possible
- Ensure food and water do not freeze
- Limit outdoor time and provide proper protection
- Pipes
- Insulate pipes when possible
- Open sink cabinets to allow warm air to circulate
- Disconnect outdoor hoses and shut off sprinkler systems
- Plants
- Know temperature thresholds
- Cover plants ahead of the cold to help retain heat
