On January 12, 2026, at approximately 3:09 p.m., Fremont Police Department Officers responded to the intersection of Cushing Parkway and Northport Loop East regarding a major injury collision between a passenger vehicle (pickup truck) and a motorcyclist. The motorcyclist suffered major injuries and was transported to a local area hospital. The driver of the pickup was uninjured and remained on scene.  Unfortunately, approximately one hour later, the motorcyclist was pronounced deceased at the hospital.  The Alameda County Coroner’s Office later responded and identified the decedent as 49-year-old San Jose resident, Andrew Barrett Mackenzie.
 
The Fremont Police Traffic Unit is investigating this incident. Based on the preliminary investigation, both vehicles were traveling eastbound on Cushing Parkway when the truck came to a stop at a red light at the Northport Loop East intersection, positioned in the #1 lane as the first vehicle from the limit line. The traffic signal was confirmed to be functioning properly at the time. The #2 lane of the roadway was closed for construction, with adequate signage and cones to direct traffic.  As the traffic signal turned green for eastbound vehicles, the motorcyclist arrived at the limit line and accelerated to pass on the passenger side of the truck. The spacing was limited due to the construction zone. The motorcyclist hit a few traffic cones and attempted to merge into the #1 lane. The motorcycle and the truck then collided in a sideswipe-type collision. The motorcyclist then lost control and fell to the ground, where he was struck by the truck's rear passenger tire. The motorcyclist was wearing a helmet. The cause of the collision is still under investigation; however, drug or alcohol impairment is not suspected to be a contributing factor.
