West Springfield, MA: The Town of West Springfield is reminding residents about upcoming events and information that may be of interest to the community at large.
Town Census – Residents will be receiving their local census forms from the Town Clerk’s Office later this month. The mailing will also include dog license renewal information as well as information related to resident surveys from the Town’s new resident alert system, Regroup. New Resident Alert System – The Town is transitioning from Nixle/Everbridge to Regroup, a new alert system that provides emergency notifications, weather alerts, road closures, and community updates through text, phone, email, and more. Residents are encouraged to register at https://tinyurl.com/RegroupWestSide. As an incentive, anyone who enrolls will be entered to win one of ten West Side-opoly board games. Hartsprings Monthly Donation Event – On Saturday, January 24 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., the Hartsprings Foundation will be hosting its monthly donation drive in front of Town Hall, 26 Central Street, West Springfield. Senior/Veteran Tax Work-Off Program – The Town is accepting applications for forty (40) positions in the 2026 Senior/Veteran Tax Work-Off Program. Selected participants are required to work 85 hours in their work assignment to earn a rebate of $1,275 on their real estate taxes. Applications are available in the lobby of Town Hall, 26 Central Street, West Springfield. The deadline to apply is January 30, 2026. Real Estate Tax Abatements and Exemptions – The West Springfield Assessor’s Office reminds property owners that applications for real estate tax abatements are due by February 2 this year (the usual February 1 deadline falls on a weekend, so applicants receive an additional business day). In addition, applications for statutory real estate tax exemptions are due by April 1. Exemptions may be available to qualifying seniors, veterans, surviving spouses, and individuals who are legally blind. Applications must be filed annually and supporting documentation may be required. Forms and additional information are available through the Assessor’s Office ([email protected] or (413) 263-3050).
Veterans Coffee Hour – West Springfield Veteran Services invites veterans to attend a coffee hour held every third Thursday of the month from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the West Springfield Senior Center, located at 128 Park Street, West Springfield. Join fellow veterans for fresh-brewed coffee, conversation, and camaraderie in a welcoming, informal setting. This is an opportunity to share stories and experiences, meet the Town’s Veteran Service Officer (VSO), and learn more about VA benefits and local resources. No appointments or paperwork are required. All veterans are welcome.
Indoor Walking & Jogging at West Springfield High School – The West Springfield Park and Recreation Department is excited to announce that the indoor track located at West Springfield High School, 425 Piper Road, will be open to West Springfield residents for walking and jogging on Sunday, January 18, 25, February 1, 8, 22, March 1, 2026 from 12:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Children 13 & under may walk or jog with an adult. Snow Festival – The West Springfield Public Library will host a Snow Festival on Saturday, February 14 featuring activities for all ages. Highlights include Hands on Nature: Introduction to Wildlife Tracking at 10:00 a.m. for ages 5 and up, where participants will learn to identify local mammal tracks and signs and create track rubbings and a take-home cast. Additional activities include youth programming throughout the day, an afternoon ice sculpture created by ice carver Bill Poe in front of the library, and adult activities such as a snowflake scavenger hunt, blackout poetry, and snowflake crafts.
Stuffie Sleepover – What will your stuffies do at a sleepover at the library? Find out during the Stuffie Sleepover at the West Springfield Public Library on Wednesday, February 18. Drop off a favorite (and brave!) stuffed animal between 6:00 and 7:30 p.m. and pick them up after 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 19 to see what adventures they had overnight. Please choose a stuffy who is not afraid to sleep overnight.
Bead Therapy Workshop with Zangar “Z” Freeman – On Saturday, January 24 at 2:00 p.m., the West Springfield Public Library will host a Bead Therapy Workshop using jewelry making as a form of art therapy. Participants will learn basic beaded jewelry techniques and explore the creative and grounding properties of semi-precious stones while creating a wearable piece of art. Registration is required. This program is generously funded by the Kathleen and Walter Miller Trust.
Adult Winter Reading Program – The West Springfield Public Library invites adults to participate in Winter Reading, running January 1 through February 27. Complete 10 or more reading challenges to earn a small prize. Registration is available at the Adult Services Desk or online at wspl.readsquared.com.
Building Better Mental Health with Chris Rich – Join Certified Life Coach and Mental Health Presenter Chris Rich on Tuesday, February 24 at 6:30 p.m. for a program focused on understanding stress and emotions and learning practical tools for resilience and mental well-being. Registration is encouraged.
Friendly Competitions at the Library – The West Springfield Public Library will host several interactive events this winter, including an UNO Tournament on Monday, February 2 at 6:00 p.m., Board Game Night on Wednesday, February 4 at 6:30 p.m., and Music Bingo: The Sequel on Saturday, February 28 at 2:00 p.m.
New Local History Display Case – A new Local History Display Case at the West Springfield Public Library, generously funded by the Alice Zuvers Trust, will debut during the first week of February. The inaugural display will feature items from the military service of late West Springfield native and veteran Taylor Cook, donated by his wife to the Bertera History Room.
Reminder About Snow and Ice Removal – The Town would like to remind residents that, in accordance with local ordinances, snow and ice must be removed from sidewalks within 24 hours of the conclusion of a weather event. Clearing walkways promptly helps ensure safety for pedestrians and prevents accidents due to slippery conditions. Residents are encouraged to take action as soon as possible to comply with the ordinance and help maintain a safe and accessible community for all. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our sidewalks clear this winter season.
