San Leandro Police Investigates Officer-Involved Shooting

San Leandro, CA – The San Leandro Police Department is investigating an officer-involved shooting (OIS) that occurred just after 12:30 AM on January 19, 2026, on the railroad tracks to the southwest of the intersection of Davis Street and Alvarado Street.

Minutes earlier, an SLPD officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a black Mercedes sedan, which immediately fled from the officer at a high rate of speed.  The Mercedes was involved in a single-vehicle collision against the curb at the southwest corner of Davis Street and Alvarado Street.  The occupants of the vehicle fled on foot, including the suspect driver of the Mercedes, who was observed running south on Alvarado wielding a rifle.

As units arrived in the area to assist, an officer located the suspect on the railroad tracks to the west of Alvarado Street, still wielding a rifle.  The officer commanded the suspect to drop the firearm, the suspect failed to comply, and an officer-involved shooting occurred.

The suspect was later taken into custody by other SLPD officers, and the rifle was recovered from his person.  Neither the suspect nor any involved officers were injured as a result of the shooting.

Consistent with SLPD policy, criminal and administrative investigations of the OIS will be conducted by SLPD’s Criminal Investigation Division and Professional Standards Unit, respectively, followed by a review from the Office of the Independent Police Auditor for the City of San Leandro.  Additionally, an investigation by the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office will also be conducted concurrently.  The officer involved, a 4.5-year veteran with the department, will be placed on administrative leave per protocol.

While SLPD remains committed to transparency, the release of information related to this OIS will be limited at this time to ensure the integrity of the investigation.  The sharing of additional details will be determined by the progress of the investigation and be in compliance with the law.
