PERSONAL SAFETY | COMPLICATE LIFE FOR CRIMINALS
These suggestions can help you prevent victimization while out in public or at your workplace. By implementing a few straightforward measures, you can reduce your personal risk while simultaneously deterring criminals.

Street Safety
  • Be vigilant about your surroundings and the people around you. If you notice anyone behaving suspiciously, steer clear by crossing the street, entering a nearby store, or altering your path. Contact law enforcement if you suspect you are being followed.
  • Avoid walking alone, particularly at night or in poorly lit areas. Remain in well-lit, populated locations as much as possible. Ensure a friend or family member knows your destination when you go out.
  • Stay alert and do not become complacent in your routine.
  • Eliminate distractions. Engaging in phone conversations, listening to music, or searching for directions can hinder your ability to remain aware of your environment.
  • Walk with confidence, keeping your head up, scanning from side to side, and maintaining a steady pace. Make eye contact with others as you walk.
  • Safeguard your belongings. If you carry a handbag, hold it securely against your body, rather than around your neck. Consider using a dummy wallet or purse. Minimize the number of personal valuables you carry.
  • Wear comfortable clothing and shoes that would allow you to run if necessary. Wear reflective clothing so drivers can see you as you cross the street.

Car Safety
  • Ensure that you lock your doors immediately after entering or exiting your vehicle.
  • Choose safe parking locations, ensuring there is sufficient lighting and that your car is visible to the public. Before parking, scan the area for any suspicious individuals or vehicles nearby.
  • Avoid carrying too many items in your arms when approaching or leaving the vehicle.
  • Keep your car keys readily accessible in your hand to prevent unnecessary delays before entering your vehicle.
  • Always check the back seat before getting into your car. Refrain from lingering in your vehicle (such as reading, eating, or napping).
  • Do not leave any valuables inside the vehicle, including mobile phones and GPS devices.
  • If you suspect you are being followed, drive to a public location or a police, sheriff, or fire station.
