MAJOR WINTER STORM THIS WEEKEND

We have been meeting and preparing for a major winter storm to impact our community this weekend into Monday. While the weather forecasts' final snow total amounts have varied, the storm's impact will be significant. The combination of 12 or more inches of snow with freezing rain and sleet will create multiple driving problems. Our Department of Public Works is gearing up to clear over 151 miles of roads and 8 miles of sidewalks in the Township. Even after the snow stops, it will take time to clear everything.

Here is the latest information;

FORECAST:

Snow Starts:    Sunday 1 AM

Snow Ends:    Monday, early morning

The heaviest snowfall will take place Sunday morning into Sunday afternoon

Total snowfall: 12 to 14 inches with mixing of freezing rain and sleet

IMPACTS: 

  • Sunday’s road conditions will be hazardous. Widespread road closures expected.
  • Monday's road conditions will be very difficult with plow crews working to clear the streets.
  • Power outages are possible if widespread icing occurs.

PREPARATION:

DPW - South Brunswick Department of Public Works 

  • 79 Employees in 67 crews will be utilized to clear the roadways
  • 2000 tons of salt are available
  • 2200 gallons of calcium chloride ice melt are available 

POLICE

  • Increased staffing levels on all shifts
  • Activated the emergency operations center
  • Implemented the incident command plan

FIRE

Monmouth Junction, Kendall Park, Kingston Fire Departments
  • Implemented staffing at firehouses
  • Increased manpower levels
  • Developed an extended operations plan

EMS

Monmouth Junction and Kendall Park First Aid Squads, along with South Brunswick EMS

  • Increased available units
  • Strategically placed resources
  • Developed an extended operations plan


COMMUNICATIONS

On Sunday, we will issue storm briefings by email and text through our Nixle platform. We will also use our social media platforms, Instagram and X @SoBrunswickPD. Briefings will be at 9 AM, 3 PM, and 7 PM.

Additional alerts may be issued as needed.

Parking Restrictions

South Brunswick requires no parking on Township streets during snowstorms. Plow crews will be working around the clock to clear the roads. Doing this will allow the roadways to be cleared faster.

CLOSING

A majority of events scheduled around the town on Sunday have been cancelled, or locations closed. Here are some of the cancellations;

  • St. Augustine of Canterbury Church - no masses on Sunday or Monday
  • St. Augustine of Canterbury School - open house cancelled Sunday, NO school on Monday 
  • St. Cecilia Roman Catholic Church - no masses on Sunday or Monday
