What Residents Should Know About Snow Removal
What Residents Should Know About Snow Removal
1. Plowing takes time
During a snowstorm, crews focus first on main roads, emergency routes, and hills. Residential streets are typically plowed after primary roads are passable. If snow is still falling, streets may need to be plowed more than once.
2. Snow will be pushed to the curb
Plows move snow from the roadway to the side, which may block driveways or cover sidewalks. Unfortunately, this is unavoidable and does not mean your street was skipped.
3. Parked cars slow plowing
Cars parked on the street make it harder to clear snow curb-to-curb. When possible, residents should follow snow emergency parking rules or move vehicles off the street.
4. Sidewalks are the property owner’s responsibility
In most municipalities, residents and businesses are responsible for clearing sidewalks adjacent to their property within a certain time after the storm ends.
5. Please do not throw snow back into the street
Shoveling snow into the roadway creates hazards and can undo plowing efforts. It may also be a violation of local ordinance.
6. Salt and plows are used wisely
Crews monitor temperatures and conditions to decide when to plow or apply salt. Over-salting can damage roads, vehicles, and the environment.
7. Avoid following or passing plows
Plow trucks move slowly and may change direction unexpectedly. For everyone’s safety, keep a safe distance and never pass a working plow.
8. Emergency access is a priority
Snow removal is coordinated with police, fire, and EMS to ensure emergency vehicles can travel safely throughout the community.
9. Report issues appropriately
If your street has not been serviced after the storm has ended and crews have completed their routes, residents may report concerns to the public works department—please be patient during active storms.
10. Alternat parking areas
The flowing lots may be used for East Rutherford residents during the storm,
