Always operate generators strictly according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Never operate a generator indoors or in enclosed or semi-enclosed spaces, including homes, garages, or sheds. Generators should be placed at least 20 feet away from buildings and kept well clear of doors, windows, and vents to prevent carbon monoxide exposure.
All downed power lines should be considered live and extremely dangerous. Stay at least 30 feet away from downed wires and immediately report them to the Watchung Police Department or to PSE&G at 800-436-7434. Be aware that downed wires may be hidden by standing water or snow, and do not enter flooded or snow-covered areas where wires may be present.
Residents are reminded to clear snow and ice from exterior vent pipes, chimneys, and other exhaust vents to prevent carbon monoxide from building up inside the home.
