Impending Snow Storm 1/25/2026
Barnegat Police and the Office of Emergency Management are actively monitoring the upcoming snowstorm this weekend. We anticipate a significant amount of snow sometime Saturday night into Monday. While everyone prepares for the storm, please be aware of the following:
Barnegat Township Ordinance 71-19 explains that whenever snow has fallen and the accumulation is such that it covers the street or highway, an emergency shall exist and no vehicle, portable sports equipment or any other obstruction deemed portable shall be parked or remain standing on any street or highway or portions thereof. These prohibitions shall remain in effect after the snow has ceased until the streets have been plowed sufficiently and to the extent that parking will not interfere with the normal flow of traffic. Everyone's cooperation will make removing snow by our Public Works Department quicker and safer.
Wait for the plow before clearing the end of your driveway. Shoveling snow back into the roadway is prohibited and creates hazards for everyone.
When shoveling, place snow to the left side of your driveway (when facing your home from the street). This helps reduce the amount of snow pushed back into your driveway apron by the plow.
Plows are fascinating—especially for kids—but they are working vehicles. Please remind children to keep a safe distance so operators can focus on the job.
If you can, avoid unnecessary travel. Giving plows room to work helps make the roads safer for everyone sooner.
Stay at least 30 feet from downed wires and anything they may be touching; report to 911 immediately. Keep out of floodwater, which can conduct electricity and hide hazards and debris.
In the event of a power outage:
-Barnegat police are working with Barnegat schools and a warming shelter will be provided in the event of a prolonged power outage.
-Use flashlights or battery-operated lanterns over candles to reduce fire risks.
-Never use grills or gas stoves for heat indoors to avoid carbon monoxide buildup.
-Operate generators outside, away from windows.
-Power up for the storm by charging all devices and keeping a car charger ready.
-Be ready with essentials including flashlights, a portable radio, extra batteries and ready-to-eat foods.
-Secure your water supply if you use a well pump with bottled water or a filled bathtub.
