As we approach this upcoming weekend and the potential for a winter storm event, Sutton County Emergency Management and the City of Sonora Emergency Management have been actively coordinating and preparing to ensure the safety of our citizens and travelers.
 
We have received several inquiries regarding the presence of first responder equipment currently staged at the Sutton County Rodeo Arena. This location has been designated as a staging area for state and federal emergency resources. These resources are positioned in Sonora so they can be quickly deployed if needed, either locally or to nearby areas. There is no cause for concern regarding the presence of this equipment; it is simply on standby for potential deployment.
 
In the event of extended impacts or limited lodging availability, the following proposed locations have been identified:
 

• Emergency Shelter: Old Elementary School Gymnasium, located at 1st Street and Prospect Avenue
• Warming Center: First Baptist Church fellowship hall, located at 111 East Oak Street, Sonora, Texas
• Warming Center: St. Anns Catholic Church fellowship hall, located at 311 W. Plum, Sonora, Texas

 
Please note that these locations are proposed only and have not been activated at this time. If activation becomes necessary, official notifications will be issued to keep the public fully informed.
 
For road conditions, traffic updates, and travel advisories, residents and travelers are encouraged to monitor information provided by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) through their official advisory platform “drivetexas.org”.
 
As conditions develop, Sutton County Emergency Management and the City of Sonora Emergency Management will continue to provide updates and timely information.
