Winter Storm Alert from Denville Township
Good Afternoon, Denville!
The Mayor's Office, Emergency Management, Police, Fire, and Public Works are monitoring the potential for a significant winter storm to impact the township on Sunday into Monday, bringing heavy snow, sleet, and ice. We are monitoring the expected frigid temperatures impacting the area beginning Friday evening through at least Wednesday.
We want to remind our residents of these safety tips:

Make Your Home a Safe Haven
Stay off the roads: Between the heavy snow and ice, along with the wind, travel is expected to become extremely difficult Sunday through Monday morning. If you can stay home, please do! It helps our DPW crews clear the roads faster and keeps you out of harm's way.
Clear Your Vents: While you’re shoveling, please make sure snow drifts don't block your dryer and furnace vents. This keeps your air clean and your heater running smoothly.

Using Generators Wisely
If the wind causes power flickers and you need to use a generator, please remember the 20-foot rule:
Keep the generator at least 20 feet away from the house.
Never run it in a garage or basement.
Make sure your home’s windows and doors stay tightly closed nearby to keep Carbon Monoxide out.

Be a "Hydrant Hero"
This is where we really need your help! After the snow falls, it can quickly freeze into solid ice, especially with the expected temperatures.
The 3-Foot Rule: Please clear a 3-foot circle around any hydrant near your property and a path to the street.
Why it matters: In an emergency, we don't want to spend precious minutes chipping ice. Helping us find the hydrant quickly means we can help our neighbors even faster!

Homeowners and/or tenants are responsible for clearing snow and ice from sidewalks within twenty-four (24) hours of a winter storm.
When shoveling driveways, if possible, clear the end (along the road) last to allow time for plow crews to complete the pushing back of snow, thus avoiding the frustration of re-shoveling. If early shoveling is unavoidable, place as much snow as possible on the side that is opposite from which the plow will approach. This will decrease the amount of snow re-plowing to the driveway opening.
Please do not throw or push snow back into the roadway when cleaning your driveway or side walk
Remove trash and recycling cans from the end of the driveway when possible.

Ensure that mailboxes are visible to prevent damage from snowplowing operations. Mailboxes should not extend beyond the curb line and into the street. The Township is not responsible for damage to mailboxes that extend into the roadway. Ideally, mailboxes should be 46" above the road surface. This will allow the plows (42" high) to toss the snow under the mailboxes.
Denville Township, as always, will be ready to respond to any emergency throughout the duration of this event. For any emergency, please dial 9-1-1; otherwise, dial the non-emergency number of 973-627-4900
We hope you all stay warm over the next couple days (use the storm as an excuse to stay home and watch the games!) and let's look out for one another!
