Winter Storm Warning in Effect

The City of Oneonta is preparing for a winter storm system expected to impact the area beginning Sunday and continuing into Monday. Forecasts indicate accumulating snow, very cold temperatures, and hazardous travel conditions.

Residents should anticipate slippery roads, reduced visibility, and difficult driving conditions, particularly Sunday afternoon through Monday morning. Extremely cold temperatures and wind chills may also pose safety concerns.

City crews will be actively monitoring conditions and will begin snow and ice operations as needed, prioritizing emergency routes and main roadways before moving to residential streets.

Residents are urged to take the following precautions:

·       Avoid unnecessary travel during the storm, if possible.

·       If driving is necessary, reduce speed, allow extra stopping distance, and use caution.

·       Dress in layers and limit time outdoors due to cold temperatures and wind chill.

·       Bring pets indoors and ensure adequate shelter for animals.

·       Check on neighbors, especially seniors and individuals with medical needs.

·       Prepare for potential delays by ensuring you have food, medications, and emergency supplies on hand.

·       Help keep fire hydrants clear of snow and ice. Clearing hydrants near your home or business can save valuable time during an emergency.

·       Make sure furnace, dryer, and generator vents are clear after storms—blocked vents can lead to dangerous carbon monoxide buildup.

Parking restrictions will be lifted at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. Vehicles left parked on City streets after 2 ½” of snowfall are subject to ticketing/towing.  Residents are encouraged to refer to the City’s parking map for designated parking areas. Any changes to City operations or parking requirements will be announced through official City communication channels.

Information on Oneonta Public Transit Services will be available tomorrow afternoon.

Residents are encouraged to monitor local weather forecasts and follow the City of Oneonta on its social media platforms for updates.

In the event of an emergency, dial 911. For non-emergency concerns related to City services, residents should use normal departmental contact channels.
