North Castle Declares State of Emergency

The Town Supervisor has declared a State of Emergency for North Castle due to the current snow storm. This declaration is due to the hazardous conditions on the roadways throughout Town. This situation threatens public safety.

This State of Emergency is effective immediately and will remain in effect until 4:00 pm on Monday January 26, or until such time it is rescinded by a subsequent order. This will allow our Highway Department personnel who have been working throughout the storm to effectively clear and then treat all roadways.

The Governor and County Executive have already issued a State of Emergency. All non-essential workers should stay off the roadways, and parking of vehicles on roadways is prohibited during this time.

Byram Hills & Valhalla School districts have already announced school closures for tomorrow. North Castle Town Offices will also be closed tomorrow due to the storm.

Stay warm. Stay Safe. Look out for one another.

A warming center/ shelter will be opened at the Hergenhan Center should the need arise due to power outages. If you need this resource, please contact the North Castle Police Department at 914-273-9500. We will update the community with a Nixle message in the event the warming center/ shelter is activated.

Stay warm. Stay Safe. Look out for one another.

Winter Weather Reminders:
  • Follow the local weather forecasts as weather conditions may change rapidly. The police desk frequently fields phone calls during and immediately after a storm asking for the conditions of roadways. Please stay off the roadways if possible during these time periods to allow the Highway Department to clear the roads. The police department generally has an uptick in avoidable motor vehicle accidents and disabled vehicle calls during a storm.
  • Winter Weather Tips from Westchester County to include information on frostbite and hypothermia, and space heater safety.
  • During storms and power outages check on elderly and disabled relatives, neighbors and friends.
  • Shovel snow in moderation, particularly if you have any medical condition or you do not exercise regularly.
  • After the storm you must clear off your vehicle of any snow. It is hazardous and against the law to deposit snow from your vehicle onto the roadway.
  • Do not leave vehicles parked on the street during the overnight hours. Vehicles may be summoned, but likely TOWED if they hinder snow removal: “No vehicle shall be allowed or permitted to be parked, stored or kept unattended on any Town highway or other highway within the Town of North Castle from 1:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. during the period from November 15 to April 1.”
  • Please do not shovel or plow any snow from your property onto the roadway. Depositing of snow into the roadway is a violation of Town Code and NY State Law; as well as creating a risk to public safety. If you hire private contractors for snow removal services, we kindly ask you to remind them of this rule.
  • Residents must also be aware to not allow fire hydrants to be or remain obstructed. Please ask your snow removal persons to be cognizant of this significant public safety concern.
  • If you plan to use a generator in the event of a power outage, make sure that it is being used safely. Do not run a portable generator inside of your home or business; keep it outside and away from the house so that the exhaust does not cause anyone to become sick with carbon monoxide poisoning. Keep combustible materials away from the generator and, when refueling, turn it off and let it cool down. Additional generator safety tips are available HERE.
Con Ed customers can report downed power lines, outages, and check service restoration status at www.conEd.com or by calling 1-800-75- CONED (1-800-752-6633). Please do not call the Police Department to report loss of power. This potentially ties up telephone lines available for emergencies and you will be referred to contact Con Ed directly. Treat all downed wires as if they are live. Be mindful that downed wires can be hidden from view by tree limbs, leaves, or snow.

Stay warm. Stay Safe. Look out for one another.
Please encourage your neighbors to sign up for Nixle alerts.
