Crime Prevention Advice | Catalytic Converter Theft
Friends and neighbors of Duarte. We are four weeks into the new year, and thieves are aware of it. The theft of catalytic converters is rampant!!! Although the daily theft figures vary, California has seen a substantial number of catalytic converter thefts, with estimates ranging from several dozen to hundreds each day in certain regions. The City of Duarte has experienced 10 catalytic converter thefts since January 1, 2026.

Thieves generally sell catalytic converters for approximately $300 to $500, while the victims of these crimes may face expenses of up to $3,000 for a replacement catalytic converter.

To assist car owners in preventing or minimizing this type of theft, several strategies have been developed:
  • Engrave serial numbers on catalytic converters using the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) of your vehicle.
  • Install an anti-theft device that is specifically designed for catalytic converters. These devices are available in various types from different manufacturers and can significantly improve security against theft.
  • Park vehicles in garages or carports. If you must park in driveways or on the street, consider installing motion sensor security lights, cameras, and anti-theft car alarms. Motion-sensing lights can deter some thieves by providing sudden illumination, which may prompt them to leave the area.

In the unfortunate event that your catalytic converter is stolen, it is important to promptly contact your local police department and your insurance company.

LASD is aware of this crime trend and is actively working to prevent such incidents in our community. Increased patrols in neighborhoods, local businesses, and schools, along with educating the community on preventative measures, are just a few of the ways we are dedicated to ensuring the safety of our citizens and their vehicles.

It is important to note that the Toyota Corolla and Prius (all years) have been the preferred vehicles for the recent increase in catalytic converter thefts. The time of the thefts varies, but they usually occur between 12 and 4 AM.
