ECPD requests the public's help in identifying a residential burglary suspect

Press Release: Case Number 2026-0000174

On Sunday, January 25, 2026, at approximately 2:36 a.m., El Cerrito Police received a text-to-911 report of a residential burglary in progress in the 1700 block of Lexington Avenue.

The resident reported hearing noises inside the home and observing light from a flashlight outside the bedroom door. The suspect briefly opened the bedroom door, saw the resident holding a cellphone, and immediately closed the door without entering the bedroom and left the residence.

Officers responded and searched the residence and the surrounding area but did not locate the suspect. The investigation determined the suspect gained entry by prying open a window, reaching inside, and unlocking a door. The suspect stole an item of clothing before fleeing. Video surveillance captured the suspect leaving the area.

The suspect is described as an African American male, approximately 35–45 years old, wearing a black sweatshirt, black pants, white shoes with red striping, and carrying a tan backpack.

El Cerrito Police are actively investigating this crime and are requesting the public’s help. We are asking residents in the area to check home surveillance systems to see if they might have video of the suspect. Please contact the El Cerrito Police Department tip line at 510-215-4435 or [email protected] if you recognize the suspect or have additional information.
