Roselle Police Respond to Juvenile Online Dispute and Precautionary School Lockdown

Roselle, NJ. January 29, 2026,

The Roselle Police Department responded to Grace Wilday Junior High School yesterday, at approximately 10:58 a.m., following information related to an online dispute involving three juveniles.

On Tuesday, January 27, 2026, the juveniles engaged in an argument during a FaceTime group chat. During that exchange, images of firearms were shared and statements were made suggesting possession of those firearms. The communications indicated an intent to confront one another at school on January 28, 2026.

Based on the information received, officers responded immediately and placed Grace Wilday Junior High School into lockdown as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students, staff, and the surrounding community.

A thorough investigation was conducted. No firearms were located on school grounds or in the possession of the juveniles. The Union County Sheriff’s Office K9 Unit conducted a sweep of the building with negative results.

The length of the lockdown, which later transitioned to a shelter in place, was necessary to coordinate a controlled, phased release of students to their parents in a safe and orderly manner.

The individuals involved were two 13 year olds and one 12 year old. Parents and guardians were notified, and the matter is being addressed in coordination with appropriate authorities. No injuries were reported.

Due to the age of those involved, no further information will be released.

Mayor Shaw stated, “When student safety is involved, there is no second-guessing. I fully support the actions taken yesterday to protect our schools and our community.”

The Roselle Police Department takes all information involving potential threats and firearms seriously and will continue to act swiftly when public safety may be at risk.

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Roselle Police Department Detective Bureau at 908-245-9200.
